Q&A: In San Salvador for a Wedding
Q.My wife and I will be traveling to El Salvador this August to attend a wedding in San Salvador. We would like to spend a week there to explore the country, but neither of us is yet 25, and I have not found an agency willing to rent a car to someone below that age. What can you recommend for traveling in San Salvador?
— Michael Sanders, Fort Worth
A.I found three car-rental companies in San Salvador that will rent cars to you if you’re under 25. Avis (www.avis.com.sv) charges a daily surcharge of $10 if you’re between the ages of 21 and 25; Budget (budget.com.sv) has the same policy, with a surcharge of $7. The age requirement for Quick Rent a Car (quickrentacar.com.sv) is 21, with no surcharge.
For a small country, El Salvador abounds with attractions: volcanoes, coffee plantations, national parks and a gorgeous Pacific coast. In the city center of San Salvador, the capital, you’ll find the National Theater, National Palace and Cathedral. Take a cab to the Zona Rosa neighborhood and check out the David J. Guzmán National Museum of Anthropology and the Museo de Arte. Here you can dine at one of the many ethnic restaurants on Boulevard del Hipódromo; later, for some night life, head to the Multiplaza Mall.
For a more rural experience, Frommer’s (the Travel section’s online content partner) suggests going to Suchitoto, 29 miles north of San Salvador, a charming town near Suchitlán Lake, above, where you’ll find art galleries and boutique hotels, and to Santa Ana, home to coffee plantations and sugarcane fields. Next, head to La Ruta de las Flores, a 22-mile stretch of winding road dotted with lovely little towns like Nahuizalco, Juayúa and Tacuba. To hike, head to Parque Imposible, a national park with trails and the country’s most diverse wildlife, or to the Montecristo National Park, farther north (four hours from San Salvador).
End your week at Barra de Santiago on the Pacific coast, a tiny fishing village, where you can surf, watch giant sea turtles lay their eggs in season or bird-watch in the estuary. For serious surfing, however, go east, to the beaches of La Libertad (Bonnie Tsui recommended the area in her Sept. 13, 2009, article, “Surfers Are Here! El Salvador Sheds Its Image”), Las Flores and Playa Herradura.
Missing Lesbian Mom in El Salvador?
A woman who has gone missing with her 8-year-old daughter has reportedly fled the United States, just as the custody battle between her and her former lesbian partner advances.
Lisa Miller and her biological daughter, Isabella Miller-Jenkins, are believed to be in El Salvador, according to the Associated Press. In January, Miller failed to appear in court for a mandated custody swap. She and her daughter are believed to have been in El Salvador since September.
Janet Jenkins, Miller’s former partner, was granted custody by a judge after Miller and her daughter disappeared. Her attorney, Sarah Star, says Miller and Isabella hopped the border into Juarez, Mexico, and then flew to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.
The Vermont supreme court will hear arguments on June 23 from Miller’s attorneys, who say a family court judge erred last November in awarding custody to Jenkins.
“Hundreds of children are kidnapped by selfish family members every year, without regard to the child’s safety, education or stability, and this case is no different,” Star said in an e-mail to The Advocate.”This type of conduct is outrageous and extremely harmful to children. It is illegal and there is no law that I am aware of that sanctions what Lisa Miller has done to her daughter.”
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has turned its attention to scouring Central America to find Isabella.
Miller gave birth to Isabella after the women entered into a civil union in 2000 in Vermont. However, they broke up in 2003, with Miller claiming that she was no longer a lesbian. They have been fighting over custody ever since.
Calls to Liberty Counsel, which has two of its top attorneys representing Miller, have not been returned.
Going To Aruba
Thanks to my wife Holly Laftey for the guest post.
I love to go to Aruba in the summertime. Going to Arubam TV happens to be my favorite summer activity. It is truly a beautiful island. I go every year with my family. We always go around the month of July; we usually try to be there around the Fourth of July. Most of our friends cannot understand why we want to be away during the Fourth of July holiday, they obviously have never been to Aruba. Being on that beautiful island more than makes up for the fact that I will miss out on the Fourth of July.
There is so much to do for the entire family once you get to the island. The kids can participate in numerous water activities, my husband will sit at the bar and drink like a fish, and I enjoy going to do shopping. One really cool thing about Aruba is that almost every hotel has a casino in it. At night, me and my husband will put the kids to bed and we will venture downstairs and try our luck playing a game of blackjack.
The main reason that going to Aruba is my favorite summer pastime is because it is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever gone to. The water is crystal blue and the sand on the beach is truly white. On a clear summer day, you can look across the ocean is sometimes see Venezuela. Before we head off to Aruba, we always check to see what the weather will be like on our cable tv deals.
Blowing Rock:North Carolina’s Oldest Travel Attraction
Guest Blogger Carolyn Toms
The town of Blowing Rock is located on the Blue Ridge parkway in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. It has been a tourist attraction since 1933. The actual Blowing Rock is a large cliff 4,000 feet above sea level hanging over top of John’s River Gorge which is 3,000 feet below. Its beauty is breathtaking and the nice breeze keeps it cool on top of the Blowing Rock during the hot summer months. The town of Blowing Rock offers tourists a variety of family vacations, honeymoons, and romantic getaways. Everytime me and my family go to Blowing Rock, we make sure to set the alarm we got through ADT Security in Durham before we leave. It helps me feel safer.
A tourist favorite in Blowing Rock is tweetsie railroad, a popular Wild West theme park built into the side of the mountain with a steam locomotive. There is also a petting zoo, rides, panning for different gems, not to mention carnival rides. Some of the attractions are at the main top of the mountain and you can choose whether to go on foot or by ski lift. Tweetsie Railroad is a great place to take kids, especially is you take advantage of the Thomas the Train ride. It is a favorite of most 2-6 year olds.
