El Salvador reports 13 accident deaths during national holiday

A total of 13 people have died during the first four days of El Salvador’s August national holiday, said local reports reaching here Tuesday.

Eleven of them died in road accidents and two drowned, police said.

The chief of the National Civil Protection System (SNPC), Jorge Melendez, said 119 road accidents have been reported during the holiday, 19 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

Aug. 6 marks the founding of the capital, San Salvador. The day is also the Catholic festival the transfiguration of Jesus. Many citizens choose to go to the beach or visit their families during the week-long holiday.

The SNPC has deployed 18,000 officers to help with potential emergencies during the holiday.

    Holiday should be a time of relaxation. This event should be picked up by more news outlets.
