2 amigos meet as Mexico faces El Salvador

Javier Aguirre and Carlos De los Cobos will forget an old friendship from their playing days on Mexico’s national team when the fair go head to head in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.
Aguirre’s Mexico team is at El Salvador, where De los Cobos is coach.

“I’m a Mexican, and it’s true I love my country,” De los Cobos said. “But you have to understand this is the way football is. This is the life of a coach.”

De los Cobos recalled the 2006 World Cup in which Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe — an Argentine — faced Argentina in the final 16. Argentina won 2-1 in extra time on Maxi Rodriguez’s goal.

“I’m not one who gives this a lot of importance,” De los Cobos said. “It’s my profession, my job. I have a job to do with El Salvador.”
