El Salvador has confirmed its first the A(H1N1) flu, the country’s health minister said Sunday, as clinics and public hospitals stepped up measures to combat the dreaded viral disease.
“We have confirmed that we have two people suffering from the H1N1 virus,” said Health Minister Guillermo Maza, adding that the San Salvador government was “redoubling” its efforts to prevent additional infections.
The health minister said that in addition to the two confirmed cases, there are three other suspected cases that officials are monitoring closely.
One of the confirmed cases involved a 22-year-old man who returned from travel in Mexico a couple of weeks ago, said Maza.
He added that both confirmed flu patients were responding well to medication and did not appear to be at serious risk.
Samples from the three suspected cases have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control in the United States for testing, Maza said
