
Romero took a pass in the penalty area from former D.C. United midfielder Eliseo Quintanilla and converted from 11 yards to the right of goalkeeper Leao Buhan.
El Salvador’s defense stopped Peru twice in one minute. In the 36th minute, defender Alexander Escobar slid to block Piero Alva’s 8-yard shot and force a corner kick. Then in the 37th minute, goalkeeper Miguel Montes leaped to deflect Edgar Villamarin’s 7-yard header off Juan Carlos Marino’s corner kick with his left hand.
Montes also blocked Luis Trujillo’s 22-yard line drive in the 86th minute to earn the shutout.
El Salvador will begin the final round of regional World Cup qualifying against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night. Peru will resume South America’s round-robin World Cup qualifying tournament March 28 or 29 against Chile.
