The coffee roasters of America are traveling to el Salvador to visit the local coffee plantations to see if there is a way to look at local sustainability with the agriculture of coffee. El Salvador coffee grower will get a great boost to their local economies.
BULLHEAD CITY – A local businessman is traveling to El Salvador to brew up some new ideas for his company.
Dana Kern, owner of Firehouse Coffee Roasters, is going to El Salvador to tour several coffee farms and to speak with growers regarding upcoming crops of beans.
Kern is among 12 people chosen from the United States to serve as envoys for the coffee industry. The trip is sponsored by the El Salvador government as a way for coffee roasters in the United States to see the strides made in the coffee farms and mills in El Salvador.
“We will be looking at the sustainability, both economically and ecologically, of the farms, mills and co-ops,” Kern said.
January in El Salvador is the height of coffee-picking season, Kern explained, so those on the tour will be able to watch operations in action and have an opportunity to speak with those directly involved in the day-to-day processes.
Kern said it is important for him to observe the way things are done on the farms because it gives him a greater understanding as to what the growers go through.
“Knowing what the farmers are doing is important because it enhances our knowledge of coffee. I will come back and share my experiences with my staff,” Kern said. “I want all of our employees to have the same information I do so that they are better suited to serve our customers.”
Kern and his wife, Karen, have traveled to other coffee-producing nations but this will be his first trip to El Salvador.
“Coffee beans from El Salvador make a wonderful cup of coffee and I’m excited to see the farms in action,” Kern said. He added that the beans he sees in January won’t make it to Bullhead City and the Firehouse for about eight months.
